ACTING PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN SWORN IN
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been sworn in as the President and Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed forces by the Chief Justice of Nigeria at the Aso rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Goodluck Jonathan took the oath of office in front of government ministers and other officials in Abuja almost 12 hours after President Yar’Adua died. The ceremony was performed by Chief Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu. The ceremony was not open to the public but present at the occasion were Dimeji Bankole the Speaker House of Representatives, Vincent Ogbulafor the national chairman of the President’s party (PDP) and members of the governors forum.
President Jonathan put on a sash bearing the green, yellow and white colors of Nigeria, signifying he had formally taken over as president
Afterwards he made a brief address, saying his administration was committed to pursuing electoral reform and fight against corruption “with greater vigour”
The former Acting President became the substantive president following the death of Musa Umaru Yar’Adua, who passed away on the 5th May 2010.
He will appoint a new deputy and then complete the presidential term until elections due by April 2011
