R.I.P President Yar’Adua
Nigeria President Umaru Yar’Adua has died after a long battle with Kidney and heart ailments. He was 58. The president had been sick for quite some time. He went for emergency treatment in Saudi Arabia in November and has remained out of the spotlight since then. His spokesperson said he died with his wife at his side.
Yar’Adua’s illness sapped hopes of major reforms in Nigeria and led to a power vacuum while he was unable to perform his public duties. His duties were eventually relinquished to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathon in February. There was hope that Yar’Adua would one day be able to resume the duties of the presidency, but it was not meant to be. Analysts say he will be remembered as a quite, soft-spoken man with integrity.
The Vice-President announced that today will be a national holiday in Nigeria. There will be seven days of mourning throughout the country. Quickly after his death was announced, people started arriving at the presidential palace to give their condolences.
May his soul rest in peace. Amen
