MICHELLE OBAMA STEPS OUT IN A $30 GAP DRESS

She’s a style icon whose clothing choices divide critics and inspire millions. Now Michelle Obama has proven she can wear the Main Street chains just as well as she wears the finest designer gowns.
The First Lady has stepped out in a $30 dress from the Gap – immediately endearing herself to millions of cash-strapped Americans struggling through hard economic times.
The point was underscored by her handbag – which is Lambertson Truex, a designer brand that went bankrupt in 2009 thanks to the economic downturn.
Also known for wearing H&M and Target, Mrs Obama boarded a helicopter on Friday sporting a ‘Impressionist Print Draped Dress’ from the Gap chain, retailing at $29.99.
She wore the dress as a tunic, pairing it with white ankle length slacks and black sandals – the perfect outfit for the quick flight to the presidential retreat of Camp David, where the Obamas spent a rare weekend.
Her husband looked dapper in a buttoned-down blazer with an open-necked shirt, khakis, and brown dress shoes.
Not one to stick to a genre, Mrs Obama is also often spotted in very expensive attire from designers such as Alexander McQueen and Tracy Feith.
But – much like Britain’s Royals – she is not above getting the most out of her designer gear, wearing her favourite Feith dress at least five times.
She has also been spotted with the bag in the images above several times.
This is not the first time the economically-minded First Lady has attracted attention wearing clothing from Main Street chains.
She previously wore a $10 Gap t-shirt to lunch with Nancy Reagan and sat down with The Today Show in a $34.95 H&M dress in February.
The unpretentious First Lady also notoriously donned a Merona frock (sold at Target stores) two summers ago.
When so many people are doing it tough, Mrs Obama’s clothes choices do nothing to hurt her popularity.
She has also shown herself to be socially minded in her commitment to the environment, education, healthcare and reducing child obesity with her Lets Move! campaign.
