They are some of the biggest ‘A’ list names on the planet. Nicole Kidman, J-Lo (whose fame is such that she only needs to use her initials), Tom Hanks ,Barbara Streisand, Jennifer Lopez, Blake Lively to mention but a few. But on Saturday night they were reduced to mere extras when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in dazzling style in the heart of Hollywood. And what was even more surprising was that they didn’t appear to mind a bit.
On their first full day in the city of Los Angeles on Saturday, William and Kate won over some of the most jaded celebrity-watchers in the business with a sophisticated display of old-fashioned British style, youthful glamour and newly-wedded bliss.
First it was a visit to the other-worldly surroundings of the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club where the prince was playing in a match to raise funds for his newly created charity, The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry.
The couple were then whisked off by helicopter to prepare for the highlight of their all-too brief trip, an appearance at a party thrown by the Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to celebrate home-grown talent, in particular 42 hand-picked young actors, directors and producers.
William is President of BAFTA and was keen to introduce them to the cream of Hollywood’s movie industry as well as promote the British film industry generally, aides said.
The red carpet event was held at the Belasco Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, a 1926 art deco gem which has recently undergone a £ 9million restoration.
Local celebrity-watchers marveled at the sheer number of top-flight actors that had turned out for the Duke and Duchess, including Nicole Kidman who seemed – rather bizarrely – genuinely star struck.
