Beyond Faces is five; How has it been so far?
Well, it’s been challenging, rewarding and full of experiences. And with God that has being on my side, l’ve been able to lift my head above the water. When I say challenging, I mean in terms of the saturated industry and meeting up with ever- changing demands of our clientele. And talking about the experience, it’s quite a huge one over the years, as we keep learning everyday and also improving our competency and skill. It’s not being a bed of roses but with God and supportive of my mum, I’ve been able to ”take the bull by the horn”
Can you take us back on how your romance with makeup started?
As a fresh graduate, I never wanted the regular 9-5 job; I wanted a job that I will be able to be in control of my time; I wanted to be my own boss. That has always being clear and as a child, I’ve always being good with my water colours and crayons in art and craft, not to talk of plaster cines. I never wanted something I will be tossed around in any course of learning too. I’ve always had eyes for fashion and beauty even as I have a very reserved mother. I woke up one day to tell my mum I wanted to learn the art. She never questioned me. I made enquires and I enrolled with House of Tara, now an Int’l brand. I was there for three months, doing lots of practicals and trying my hands on so many faces and gele art. After I left as one of her best students, she got me a job with Blackup makeup range, which was new in the country then and I was signed-on as their official makeup artist.
My job was to makeup for people to sell the makeup products at ”The Palms” shopping mall and three more of their outlets around Lagos recommending and giving tips and tricks to customers. I met a lot of people, at the same time teaching myself more about the trade. And being under a disciplined Halali Hart, I was always on my feet. I started flying alone after a while and in 2008 my makeup outfit was basked the ”Hottest Makeup Artist of the year. In 2009, we were also nominated under fashion and style category at the prestigious Nigerian Future Awards. Now we render a full fledge service; bridal hair styling, mobile Makeup Bar, Eye-brow maintenance, total bridal over-hauling, Pro-master class, DIY classes, Beauty writer, workshops and seminars, consultation, home-call and in -studio service, organic skin-care products. In this short or long while, our brand has expanded its tentacles, partnering with top branded companies. In other words seeing and providing for the needs of “Women of colour” and building relationship with our clients
Who was the first bride you ever worked on and what was the experience?
My first bride was Christy Mcfoy Adebayo. The wedding reception was held at Memorable gathering Alausa, Ikeja. I even attended her fifth wedding anniversary get-together this year
What would you say is your motivational factor?
My motivational factors are the strong pleasing, encouraging words from clients after a job well done. The can-do speeches from friends and family and my ever burning passion has kept me not looking back and gives me the courage beyond a bleak of doubt
In these five years of doing business, have you ever thought of quitting?
I’ve never thought of quitting but there were some trial times that I had no choice. There are times I depend on my knee(prayer)rather than my feet. I’ve always being seeing beyond me.
Heard you are also into some project in order to give back to the
society. Can you tell us what it is about?
As to giving back to the society, we’ve visited quite a number of less privileged homes; we are sponsoring four ladies on a free-make-up training
When is Beyond Faces launching her own makeup line?
Makeup line is not something I’m considering right now, but, better things are in the pipeline.
For someone that has transformed a lot of brides, it will be nice to
know when the wedding bell is ringing and who is the lucky man?
Wedding bell is for God to decide; He is our author and finisher of our lives.
