HOW TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR YOUR AGE

Spread the love

Style changes as a woman grow older. Effortless style evolves with the changes in the body and lifestyle. Getting older and looking great while getting there does not have to be a challenge. You can dress your age without over doing it.

There are so many different styles available for women over the age of 30 and above. When you are beyond 20, you simply cannot dress like a teenager anymore. We should look fierce and flattering as we get older.

This is not to say that once you hit the big 3-0 or 4-0 your fashion sense has to metamorphosized into that of your Mother’s.

Fashion can be fun at any age, and as long as you know how to get it right and present your best self to the world around you. Like it or not, people judge you most on your appearance, so let’s give the best impression we can.

In this report, BOLA AKINBOADE presents to you guidelines for dressing most appropriately for your age and to avoid the fashion age blunder.

IN YOUR TWENTIES

Your twenties are a time for defining your fashion sense. This is a decade where following many of the trends is most acceptable, since the fashion industry is directed mostly to your generation. Wear what you love, and if you feel great in it, take note. This could give you much insight that will guide you throughout your fashion timeline.

In your teens you desired to make really bold statements and to separate yourself from the masses. You are also not afraid to take risks.

People expected you to do crazy things. Many of those risks might still be on your agenda in your twenties, but you need to become a little more modest, especially if you have to consider the workplace.

Experiment and find what you feel most comfortable in. some of those fashion suitable include ; animal prints, brightly colored tights, large headbands, flowing fabrics, tailored trousers, polo shirts, pencil skirts amongst others.

If you don’t feel so sure about your figure, go for solid colors and a very classic silhouette, not necessarily the tight jeans, but maybe a pair of black stretch pants or younger fitted trousers; not too tight, not too baggy.

You can add chunky jewelry to a very flirty young dress, whether it’s floral print or a tube, or you can contrast an adult, sophisticated fabric like lace or heavy brocade with a silhouette that is really young, such as evening baby-doll dresses (if you’re tall).

You should be able to look fresh and sophisticated when you slip into something special for an exclusive night time event. Strapless dress, spaghetti straps and off-the-shoulder dress will do justice at such events.

IN YOUR THIRTIES

The twenty-something rules still apply. If your figure starts to head south, maybe after you’ve had a couple of kids, wear blousier but not baggy silhouettes.

Everything is toned down a notch this decade. If you loved big, graphic designs in your 20s, in your 30s-wear the same patterns, but instead of wearing it in the form a dress, try it in a top, in a headband, and the likes. If you wore preppy chic pieces in your twenties, keep it up. Just add a few A-line skirts with your collared tops, and invest in some short sleeved blouses that fit you fabulously. Don’t button your tops to your neckline, and be sure to pick pieces fit to your body type.

Don’t rely on low cut tops and form fitted dresses this decade; this is the decade to celebrate your subtle sexiness.

Wear jeans and pants that are tailored, and tops that won’t ride up when you bend over.

With extra curves you don’t want to wear anything that is too tight or fabrics that are too thin. Go for monochromatic separates that will give you clean and classic lines that can never be ruined.

The goal is not to look OLDER than you did ten years ago. It is to look more polished, more aware of yourself, more confident

IN YOUR FORTIES

Women are celebrated and admired at this age, and no longer regarded as approaching the golden years. There’s a fair chance you now have that area of the tummy that you’re very conscious of the kangaroo pouch that just won’t disappear. However, this can be redeemed by finding a great jacket.

This is not the time to hang up your style and bring out the mom jeans! The styles you have always loved can be updated and freshened to reflect your new sense of self. The key to looking your best in your 40s is all about fit- tailor dresses.

If you love black, by all means add it to your wardrobe-None can match it in sophistication. But if simple black bores you, jewel tones look great on practically every skin tone, and chocolate brown with cream is a lovely combo as well.

Wide legged trousers should be a staple in your wardrobe at this age. If you have more hips than you did in your twenties, these are great at keeping that your secret. If you are on the thin side, they do a great job of giving you curves where you had none. Scarfs, tunics, and a new little black dress can do wonders too.

Things to avoid in your 40s include; low-rise jeans, leggings and anything too trendy.

Bottom line- when you are shopping, ask yourself- does this tell people that I am classy, sophisticated, and put together? Or does it scream desperate, in denial, or too revealing? Trying to dress like your 20 and 30 year old counterparts will not make people think you are 20 or 30. Embrace your growth, and celebrate that you are still around to strut your stuff!

IN YOUR FIFTIES

By now you know your body and should have settled into it. Quite rightly, most women within this age bracket are not buying skins, leather catsuits, suede, because they either already own them or they simply think they’re out of their lane. And they’re not buying silk dresses that cling to their body. Instead, as the emphasis switches from sexy to sophisticated, they are much more into cotton and cashmere, as well as dresses that have beautiful lace embroidery and subtle beaded embellishments. Also, plain, satiny silk tops with a more casual trouser can still be very acceptable, giving you a hint of imagination.

Even if you still have the shape to go form-fitting, the textures of the pieces that you buy should be different.

Instead of showing cleavage, wear great body forms under boat neck tops, button-down shirts with the second button undone instead of the third, or lower scoop necks to expose collarbone and look sexier. The result is more of a silhouetted body. Even at this age, you want to be noticed and complimented without being compromised

Remember, fit and attitude play a big part. However, steer well clear of baggy pants up to the belly button, and also fitted, shiny, spandex leggings. They are just wrong in so many ways.
