FELA’S RESIDENCE NOW KALAKUTA MUSEUM

With the successful worldwide Broadway production for his
life story still fresh, the late Afrobeat legend and activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti
will once again be immortalized as his last residence, located at 18, Gbemisola
Street, Ikeja, Lagos
is being converted and called Kalakuta
Museum.
Approved by the Lagos State Government, the ultra modern
project when completed is expected to have an exhibition area, a coffee shop, a
5-room boutique hotel, a roof-top restaurant, a bar and stage, a souvenir shop,
a passenger lift, the tomb area and car park.
When established, it is said, will preserve the history of
an illustrious son of Africa, promote tourism, acquire, display and preserve artifacts,
documents and records of the man referenced as well as those  of his contemporaries of African ancestry.
It also hopes to be a custodian of collectors’ and  historical items-bordering on fine and folk
arts for public enjoyment and for scholars to assist in researches, ready accessibility
of authentic materials and relics on the man referenced, serve as educational,
historical and cultural institution of music and musicality of African origin
and entertainment of visitors to the museum.
The project is conceived and managed by Total  Consult, a firm of architects and builders of
numerous projects notably the conversion of the first colonial prison in
central Lagos to The Freedom Park.
It is scheduled for opening in October this year, during the
annual Felabrations event.
