The streaming company announced on Monday that a documentary portrait of Michelle Obama, titled ‘Becoming’ will premiere on Netflix next week.  The film described as “an intimate look into the life of former first lady Michelle Obama” is chronicling her 2018-2019 34-city book tour for her best-selling Becoming memoir.

Obama’s promotional tour, operated by Live Nation concert promoter, had the size of a rock festival, with a string of dates in sold-out arenas.

The film is expected to premiere on Netflix on May 6. Obama said in a statement that the tour experience “drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and true, and can not be messed with. We discussed the past and dreamed of a better future. Many of us dared to express our dreams out loud in dreaming about the notion of ‘becoming’.More than ever, I cherish memories and the sense of bond we strive together to resolve this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, contribute towards our families, and seek to keep up with work and school while dealing with tremendous amounts of loss, frustration, and uncertainty.  ”

Becoming has sold more than 11 million copies and been translated into more than 20 languages. Becoming is the latest release from Higher Ground Companies, the Barack and Michelle Obama production company.  Their exclusive multi-film contract has already proved fruitful with Netflix.

Their first film, Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar’s American Factory, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary earlier this year. Higher ground was behind the acclaimed documentary Crip Camp: A Mobility Movement by James Lebrecht and Nicole Newnham, which was recently released.

The former first lady admitted that timing is difficult for a community film and that social distancing naturally does not come to her: “I’m a hugger”, she said.

Michelle Obama read children’s books to kids trapped at home during the pandemic in an online series named “Monday with Michelle Obama.” “I’m here for you “, she said in her speech. “And I know you are here for one another”, Obama said. “Empathy is our lifeline here. That’s what is going to get us to the other side. Let’s use it to turn  our focus to what matters most, to rethink our goals and to find ways to make the planet better in the picture of our dreams.”
