PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE ANNOUNCE ARCHEWELL FOUNDATION’S FIRST MAJOR PROJECT
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced their charity’s first major project. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell foundation will help feed the hungry in disaster zones around the globe by supporting World Central Kitchen.
The non-profit organisation which was set up by celebrity chef José Andrés in 2010, works with cooks and community organisers to provide free meals in disaster-stricken areas.
Meghan and Harry are helping to fund the construction of four new ‘Community Relief Centres’, which can operate as emergency kitchens.
These buildings are designed to transition into schools, clinics or community centres when there is no longer any need for emergency food relief.
In a statement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “The health of our communities depends on our ability to connect to our shared humanity.
“When we think about Chef Andrés and his incredible team at World Central Kitchen, we’re reminded that even during a year of unimaginable hardship, there are so many amazing people willing – and working tirelessly – to support each other.
“World Central Kitchen inspires us through compassion in action.”
The first of the four Community Relief Centres being funded by the royal couple is being built on the Caribbean island of Domenica, which was ravaged by hurricanes in 2017.
It is set to open early next year and will be followed by another one in Puerto Rico, although the locations of the other two centres have not yet been announced.
