OJUKWU CELEBRATES 78TH BIRTHDAY ON WHEELCHAIR
Friends, family members, well- wishers and associate of Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu converged last Friday to celebrate his 78th birthday.
Though he was not present physically, they all came to celebrate a great achiever who has touched so many lives.
An inter-denominational church service jointly officiated by Monsignor Obiora Ike of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu and Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Rt. Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma as well as other clergymen from different churches was earlier held during which prayers were said for quick recovery of the Ikemba.
It will be recalled that his illness started December 1, 2010, and many people doubted Ojukwu will be alive to mark his 78th birthday. He was in coma for nearly six months and eventually made it. Despite his prolonged illness and the fact that he now sits on the wheel chair in England, he is still looking very strong.
The celebration was put together by his wife, Bianca Ojukwu. While addressing the mammoth crowd that attended the birthday celebration of the Igbo Icon who is still recuperating in a London Hospital, she thanked God for the life of her husband. Mrs Ojukwu said, “I also thank all the Igbo; it is your prayers that has kept him going. I express gratitude to President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife who has shown enough concern over the health of Dim Ojukwu.
“I want to thank Governor Peter Obi who made arrangement and he was flown abroad last year December, up till today, he has made sure that every month he comes to London to see him; he has been paying his medical bills running into hundreds of millions.
“It’s a miracle that after one year Ojukwu is still alive; it is something to celebrate despite his sickness, he remains a true general; he has starred death in the face many times and on many occasions he said by the grace of God it is not my portion. Sometimes when I’m talking to him he will keep quiet but when I tell him, you know this is not our home, Ezeigbo wont we go home, he will nod in affirmative; he wants to come back to his people in good health; he loves you all and he remains deeply appreciative.”
